Would not recommend for NFA trusts if you’re new to the process. Communication was delayed, and they didn’t take the time to explain important details or the potential ramifications of the trust name. Overall, not a supportive experience for a first-time client.

Response from owner

I'd really like to understand what "ramifications" of the trust name there might be. We've had clients give their trust quite silly names and have had clients give much longer names without any issue whatsoever. We always recommend that an NFA trust name is kept somewhat short, in case you want to do a Form 1 weapon and have to engrave the trust name on the item.
Also, I take an hour to thoroughly explain the entire trust and how it's used to every gun trust client (you - 5/8/25 from 3:30 to 4:30). We then encourage every client to feel free to contact us if they have quick questions that we are happy to answer without sending a bill. You then then arbitrarily decided that you wanted a different trust name nearly two weeks after we'd completed your work for reasons that you couldn't seem to explain.
We redrafted your documents and forwarded them to you to get executed. I'm sorry that you feel this was subpar (and also wonder why you took six months to leave a negative review) but we really did try to make it work for you.

This was an intimidating process for me that I had put off for several years. Happy I found Jim. He has a polished process, put terms on my level of understanding, and was patient throughout, even with my scattered brain. Extremely happy with the outcome and confident about the choices made. This is invaluable long term for me towards reducing stress and mental energy. I would recommend Jim to anyone looking for these services.

Response from owner

Thank you so much for your kind words, Brady! We’re thrilled to hear that you found Jim's approach comforting and effective. It's great to know that you feel more confident and less stressed as a result of your experience. We appreciate your recommendation and are here to support you whenever you need us in the future.

If I could give a zero I would. This man was completely irresponsible and cold. He never once reached out to me concerning my Mothers estate. He trusted a woman I hired who knew my Mom 1 MONTH! That woman has since proven to be completely overreaching in every aspect of my Mom's life. Thankfully she is gone! But Mr. Alder, decided to do absolutely no due diligence about his new client my Mother. Instead he trusted a women who new my Mom one month and decided that her son that had been taking care of her and her finances for 30 years was the bad guy. He puts my Mom in a Irreversible Trust. Mind you, my Mom was showing sign at the time of Dementia, and currently is in a memory care facility, but that didn't stop him. He then used the worst reputable so called so called Fiduciary possible. Stagg Fiduciaries. Have you ever heard of a Fiduciary that keeps over 20% of a person liquids assets and then calls it a Retainer Fee. For What? It was over 40%, and I'm still fighting for the rest of it. I've never met a colder human. Mr. Alder would not even take a phone call from my Mom or myself. Instead he put his wife on the phone. If Mr. Alder had done his due diligence and he would have know that my mother previously had signed a over a Power of Attorney to another so called friend that she knew 3 months, who had her check the boxes saying that she could change the beneficiaries. And made herself and her Minister over the estate. BUT HE DIDN"T! He screwed up and it took thousands to make it all right again. Shameful! Response to Mr. Alder You said that I was trying to change the will to benefit me. Yes! A few years ago, my mother was coerced into changing the Trust by this women she knew for 3 months! She was the friend of friend from her new church. These are the same friends that convinced my Mom that I was somehow stealing from her. I was even reported to Adult Services. I happily gave them all the information they ask for and offered bank statements. They quickly saw I was not the person these friends reported. Or that Mr. Alder assumed. But again, you knew nothing of the history leading up to it. Other then the hearsay of those who took control of her life. When I found out that my Mom gave here friends and her Minister the Power of Attorney and the power to CHANGE THE BENEFICIARIES TO THE ESTATE. What would anyone have done! We asked a new lawyer to reinstate the EXACT SAME TRUST that was set up over 20 years ago, when my Mother was completely capable of making decisions. We were to sign that when I got back from overseas in 12 days, but the lady I hired again influence my Mom to find another lawyer. Thus YOU! For 50 years my Mom financially supported my Brother, which I completely supported. Paid all his expenses, cars, condo, bills, etc. She spent an estimated 400,000 to 500,000 for his care. She made the decision 20 years ago of an 80/20 split at her death because of those expenses. So, if anything, I would have gotten less. But you wouldn't know anything about that because once again you didn't ask! Personally, yes I don't believe my Mom was making good decisions. Is it really funny that I complained about my Mom showing signs of Dementia! What measures are you talking about, that you say you took to ensure she was capable to sign anything! I learned from my lawyer that as he put it, the bar is very low. We both know, you asked her a couple of questions that she was able to say YES too! This is the person that a six months earlier gave here friends and their Minister the power to CHANGE THE BENEFICIARIES TO THE ESTATE. So yes I didn't think she was capable from the very beginning of the past few years. But the legal system did! He says my Mom choose Stagg Fiduciaries. Who else did you offer? Professional? I'm still fighting with them. Up until about a week ago they kept over 40% of my Moms remaining cash. They kept thousands as "A Retainer". FOR WHAT! They did nothing the past six months. Am I upset? Ya! Would you be? You didn't want to know both sides!

Mr. Ward is quite loose with his facts here. Mr. Alder was approached by his mother for representation in creating plans that Mr. Ward could not change. The woman that drove his mother to appointments was excluded from participating in the design of the plans. His mother came to Mr. Alder because Mr. Ward had arranged for her to go to another attorney and create revised estate plans that would have given Mr. Ward the vast majority of her estate. Unfortunately for Mr. Ward, his mother did not want to do that but wanted to ensure that her estate was divided equally between Mr. Ward and his brother and she did not want Mr. Ward managing her affairs. Measures were taken to ensure that his mother had the testamentary capacity to engage in estate planning (funny that Mr. Ward complains that his mother was showing signs of dementia, insinuating that she shouldn't have been doing estate planning, but Mr. Ward had been trying to get her to do estate planning far more beneficial to himself at the exact same time). Mr. Ward's mother chose to use an irrevocable trust for the specific reason that it would prevent Mr. Ward from trying to make subsequent changes to it. Mr. Ward then filed an unnecessary conservatorship petition to wrest management of her affairs from the professional fiduciary his mother had selected (the direct cause of the fees he complains about). Unlike what Mr. Ward claims, Mr. Alder did engage in due diligence and the two women Mr. Ward refers to were not included in management roles in his mother's estate planning documents for the specific reason that it was evident that neither should be involved. Mr. Alder's ethical requirements prohibit him from talking to another person about a client's estate plans, especially when he has been specifically instructed not to do so by the client.
It doesn't matter what your mother had done in previous years. She was (and I was) under no obligation to continue what may have been done in prior versions of her planning. She could have disinherited you completely, but fortunately for you, she didn't request that. What matters is that at the time she approached me, she wanted her estate plans set up the very manner that they were. I did not force her into something against her will, this is what she (not anyone else) requested.

Mr Alder helped us update a 10 year old trust, advanced directives, wills. We sought out based on website, reviews, expertise in wills/trust planning. First contact by phone with Ireland, to get a sense as to our needs, she explained the process, and I forwarded our older documents to the firm with our suggested updates. Met with Mr Alder for the first in-person appointment. He had taken the time to prereview them, and he made very appropriate suggestions based on life changes since the original documents were prepared. At our second appointment, he walked us through the changes, prepared title documents to add real property not presently in the trust - and submitted these to the county for recording. After signing, we are now awaiting the hard copy to be returned to us, along with digital copies to distribute to our executors. The hard copy is presented in a sturdy binder, very professional appearing. The process was quite straightforward. Mr Alder and Ireland were very professional, explaining things in appropriate detail. Given our experience, we have referred other family members for their needs. We're quite pleased with Alder Law. Quite reasonable fees - comparable to past legal work we've had performed. Highly recommend.
