About

Bike fits are an integral part of your cycling experience and longevity. From the moment you sit on a bicycle, you’re thinking about how you feel on it. Saddle pressure, bar drop, hand pressure. There’s so many variables that its almost impossible to get it all right without a second set of eyes. Beyond the Kinesiology involved in a physiology degree, Zack Allison is Slowtwitch certified and has thousands of hours of fitting experience. Everyone human on a bike has subtle differences and at the same time we are all very similar in size and shape as a species. Mixing muscle force length curves, partnerships with physical therapists, rider feedback, and current research, we put together a full service bike fit.

If you want to work with someone who is knowledgeable, thoughtful, helpful, humble, and who gives back to the community, go with Zack Allison. He has helped me to become both faster and more comfortable as I have grown in cycling, and even helped address some asymmetries that I have. He has a ton of useful and applicable experience so that he is able to help athletes in all disciplines and the work he does is very valuable. I would highly recommend working with Zack Allison when getting your next bike fit; Fort Collins is very lucky to have him.

Response from owner

Thanks so much, Ella! Ride on.

Had a great experience getting a bike fit from Zack at Bike Sports. I have been thinking of getting a new road bike and needed a fresh set of eyes to make sure everything was dialed. As someone that rides and training every single day it is very important for me to have the correct fit. He was able to answer any questions I may have had and helped explain some of the things he was doing to help me understand the process. He not only helped me, but with his years of racing experience, he understands the athletes point of view. In the end I was happy with how everything felt, and left feeling feel more stable and in control of the bike. He also helped me get a better picture of the size of bike I will need in the future based off my measurements. Thanks a bunch!

I had the opportunity to get a bike fit with Zack Allison over at Bike Sports the other day, and I thought I’d walk you through the process. Historically, I haven’t been super picky about my fit so it’s been a few years since my last checkup. As I’ve gotten older and previous injuries have started to flare up, I’ve become more aware of my fit and how it affects how I feel both on and off the bike. I’ve been working with Shawn Small over at Adapt Sports Therapy on an ankle issue, and having a fit with Zack is kind of an extension of those treatments. The bicycle fit with Bike Sports starts with a consultation on previous injuries and issues. In my case, it’s some ankle pain and tightness in the right hammy. There’s really no telling how much time this will take, some people have a laundry list of previous injuries and have things that are constantly bothering them on the bike. I’m generally pretty comfortable on the bike, with the exception of the hamstring tightness. The ankle only bothers me off the bike. Injuries are accounted for differently than issues. After talking about injuries and issues, Zack figures out what the goals of the fit are and what the bike is for, and then we move on to a brief physical analysis. A few air squats later, Zack is taking notes on posture, feet, flexibility, and foot-to-knee alignments. That analysis goes straight into cleat alignment and adjustments. In my case, we looked at where the Speedplay pedal is wearing and some foot positions and found that a varus wedge between the two parts of the Speedplay cleat would optimize the pedal and cleat interface. I have a tendency to supinate (weight rolls onto the outer edges of my feet). Once we worked through the cleat varus valgus alignment Zack checked out the float in the Speedplay cleats to make sure the foot can be neutral and not binding on the float. Moving up from the cleats, checking knee alignment from a Sagittal plane perspective we move to dialing in saddle height and setback from video of knee angles from a frontal plane perspective. Being able to take video of the dynamic motion of the pedal stroke is key. The apps and iPad let Zack not only make angle measurements while the client is pedaling, but he can also show the client what they look like and what we’re going to change in the fit, and why. After a few measurements Zack decided the saddle setback was spot on, a newer saddle might be beneficial, but we can try a slightly higher saddle height to optimize the knee angle for a more efficient pedal stroke. That’s pretty much the only adjustments Zack made. All the other angles look good. Once the fit is dialed in, every touch point on the bike is looked over for comfort and efficiency, Zack fixes up a fit sheet with all the measurements, notes, and any potential solutions to be sought out to complete the fit. There weren’t drastic changes to my fit; the varus wedge and new pedals will definitely help with the ankle pain, and a new Ergon saddle was necessary for general stability and comfort on the bike. The Bike Sports fit studio is located in the basement of Brave New Wheel, so heading upstairs for a post-fit beer was a nice option. I’m not going to tell you whether you need a fit or not, but I can almost guarantee it will improve your cycling experience. If you decide to get one, Zack at Bike Sports is a great option.

I've been getting a bike fit from Zack Allison every year for the last 5 years across numerous bike (road, tt, cyclocross, mountain) , and each time has been perfect. Due to a sizable leg length discrepancy, getting fit to bikes is a challenge for me, but Zack is an expert in finding what works. I never hesitate to recommend this fit studio to anyone looking to be more comfortable and happy on their bikes.

I attended Bike Sports intro to gravel camp Gravel Graceland being fairly new to gravel riding. Zack and Whitney made the process so easy with the Ibis demo bike and plenty of support, encouragement, and community. Each day's route varied in distance, technicality, and scenery. Never was I disappointed! The experience wouldn't have been the same without the expert knowledge Zack and Whitney both have as pro cyclists and Fort Collins locals. I can't wait for the next event!

Response from owner

Thanks Jess! Can't wait until next time :)

I recently attended two days of the Introduction to Gravel: Gravel Graceland camp in Fort Collins and Redfeather Lakes, CO with Zack and Whitney Allison. The camp was extremely well run with all the fun details in place: a skilled mechanic for the sag (thanks Lauren Nagle!), delicious snacks during the ride (dried fruits, assortment of bars, gummy candy, bananas, sports drinks), the prized cream soda at the top of the big climb, post-ride sandwiches, and recovery drinks. If you want to do something that makes you feel alive and challenges you, consider attending a camp with Bike Sports, as they offer private custom as well as group camps throughout the year. Both Zack and Whitney are extremely easy-going and gave me great practical tips to help me with those sandy, gravel sections -- like "use your core, relax the arms ... and eventually it will straighten out!" It gave me the confidence to take my riding up another notch and and enjoy the amazing scenery we have in Northern Colorado! Thanks so much for the experience and I hope to do this again soon!

Response from owner

You did amazing. Cool to see you crush the descent from Red Feather.

Spring 2019 update. fits done on both Road (new) and TT bike (existing). Road bike feels great, changed saddle and for the first time in a long time saddle soreness is a non-issue. Zack discovered my bars on the TT bike were not allowing me to get in a comfortable OR aero-dynamic position. He did the research for me found a bar set up that would work with my bike and set it it. great Job done by ack and time well spent at SETCR. Fall 2018 update... Ready to calm down and get some good rides in the fall but really looking to get bikes (Road and MTB) Dialed in with Zack and team. If they can fit local Pro Gavin Mannion who went on to win the Colorado Classic this year, you really need look no further then SETCR. If its bike related, Source is your go to place. Training, Coaching and bike fitting is the core but surrounded by coffee, food and gear this place is hard to beat. Zack and team have made SETCR the place to be in these cold winter months in CO! The class is unlike any spin class I have been in before as you get to BYOB (bring your own bike) and set it up on the latest and greatest in trainer hardware and seamless software integration... It plain and simply makes for a plush training experience... coffee brewing in the background is a great touch! Spend your time here to avoid those cold and miserable days on the bike and keep those winter colds at bay!

I received a bike fit by Zack on a new bike and was thrilled with it! He was very thorough and spent time on even the small details of the fit to ensure I was comfortable and happy on my bike. I have also attended a few classes here and have been very happy with the workouts, the set up, and the company!
