I called Mr Thomasson because he had extensive information in a blog detailing answers to many questions regarding divorce. While he was not able to help me directly he did give me a referral to another attorney.

Response from owner

Thank you. That was very nice of you to say. I greatly appreciate it.

Response from owner

That was very kind of you to take the time to write that. Thank you very much.

This man was a GAL for my children. While my ex husband's lawyer put interesting and dishonest twists on my words (someone from her office even prank called me asking for my ex husband's wife and giggling the night before court) and I even felt like my own attorney wasn't very vested in my children at the heart of it, I felt like Brian was the most honest person in the room that worked within the court system. My children trusted him. It's quite possible that he, not my attorney, helped my case more than anything. For anyone reading, utilize the Divorce University Online Podcast like your Bible and keep your focus on your children and give no attention to distractions opposing counsel may throw your way unless it's seriously warranted. Keep your children at heart. It's not you you're representing in that courtroom. You are essentially standing proxy for your children. Request a GAL if you can, be honest, and your children are blessed if this is their GAL. Here I go for another round in the court room and maybe the new GAL can help my daughter. If he wasn't my children's GAL before, I'd hire him as an attorney to represent me because he will have your children's back. Since most comments are always complaints about people (natural way people work), I thought I'd leave a deserved review.

Should be given ZERO stars. This attorney and his co attorney at the time MSternberg, both gave false hope, inaccurate information, false promises, questionable attorney client privilege actions, including allowing my ex to speak to them at their office during the divorce process. Was also given false information regarding the trial, the rules of the court for contested divorces were not followed, which would be reason to ask for a continuance, yet they never asked the court, and despite being told in multiple emails that they would request the divorce trial date be continued, that I made them aware of months ahead of the date, that didn't happen. Due to their negligence, misrepresentation and failure to do their due diligence in legal representation, my ex was given primary physical custody of our child. They did not zealously defend all the lies and misinformation that was told by the opposing counsel, nor my ex, under oath, on the stand, nor was any evidence presented in my case. Completely untrustworthy and questionable lawyer in child custody representation based on actual facts of what happened during my case. I lost money, precious personal belongings, was further abused by my ex, and lost irreplaceable time with my child. If mine is a one off case compared to others that he represented, that clearly says something about it that is even more concerning.

Brian Thommasson advocates for abusers and perpetuates post separation abuse. Yes, I have time because you helped my abuser take the custody of my two young children from me and are still trying to take my legal custody. And you can continue to try to tarnish my character I am still going to advocate for myself as a mother and domestic violence survivor. While you continue to aid abusers in keeping their victims in a perpetual state of financial, emotional, and mental distress. No wonder I have panic attacks in court that could require medical attention. Thank God all those officers were so calm and reassuring. Gas and food prices are extremely high, yet I drive over 4hrs in traffic every other week just to be with them for less than 72hrs. No wonder post pandemic and mid worst inflation this country has seen in my adult life I am struggling to afford the third child support increase you have helped my abuser obtain considering I was mostly a stay at home mom and navy veteran surviving on disability and the help of my friends and family. Thank God for my doctors at the VA and advocates who have helped maintain my mental health despite the clear distress not only the abuse but also the post separation abuse has caused me. While my fashion choices in court may have more of an impact on a judges decision, I managed to avoid the jail time you were requesting because I advocate for the use of medical marijuana as a veteran with PTSD, I served my country honorably. And I have always financially supported my children which is another reason I was not thrown in jail like my abuser wants so badly to see. You use shady tactics along with the GAL who failed to do a thorough investigation, and you two seem quite friendly in and out of court working together to shame me and avoid my abuser taking accountability for something he no longer admits to doing since your law firm began handling this case. My grandmother died of cancer in 2021 just a few weeks after we broke the news to her about what happened in court. She told me to keep fighting…and I will for her and my two kids.

Response from owner

Ms. Floyd I am not going to go back and forth with you on Google to let you continue to vent about this case. You had multiple opportunities with 2 different lawyers to present your case for custody. Each time the judges found the your estranged husband should have custody. The Court speaks through its Orders. It's that simple. As for the "third child support increase" - all your he is doing is asking the Court to Order that the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia be followed as support is for children.
You can continue to berate me on the Internet which is fine. The Court granted your estranged husband custody twice. I do not know why you would think that my job is to advocate for you especially when you had two very good and very competent attorneys that I respect and put on excellent cases. By the way, there were no shady techniques and it is a shame that deputies had to escort a woman a walker to her car in the parking lot because you would not simply leave her alone.

Brian Thommasson will use vexatious Litigation techniques to remove children and infants from safe and loving parents. He practices DARVO techniques for the abusers he represents and perpetuates Post Separation Abuse. One day there will be laws passed here as they are beginning to pass in other countries that will hold lawyers, GAL ‘s, and judges responsible for the cruelty and emotional torment they cause to mothers and safe parents. Luckily my abuser has not physically harmed my children but the emotional damages from being separated from their mother during their tender years won’t be evident until they are older. Ladies beware if your Narc ex goes to Brian Thommasson you will have a smear campaign targeting your mental stability and be legally abused. My abuser strangled me and thanks to Mr. Thommasson he now has a legal hold around my throat and they won’t let up until you’re dead or in jail. BEWARE! Also please find me on socials if you have a similar experience with this law firm! Family court should be a safe place! Victims of abuse should not be retraumatized and have to convince a court they were abused especially when the perpetrator is already charged with assault, plea deal or not!

Response from owner

While I do appreciate people taking the time to write reviews I do appreciate honestly. Let's start with first things first - I was not your attorney; I represented your estranged husband. You were the one who engaged in vexatious litigation techniques because after the Court granted him custody in Juvenile Court you appealed it to Circuit Court. After a multi-day trial the Circuit Court granted him custody again. The Court even went so far as to limit your parenting time. Then when it came time for child support, you did not bring the required documents on multiple occasions such that we had to get DCSE involved. You were had to be Ordered by the Court to provide income information.
During all of this you repeatedly stated that you loved your children, however, you failed to provide any support for them. You did almost nothing and this burden fell solely on their shoulders. When it came time for support, you did not even want to pay the amount stated in the Code of Virginia Guidelines for Child Support.
So attacking me on the Internet may make you feel better, however, I know that I did an excellent job for my client. The Court had no complaints or admonishments about my behaviors. I was neither sanctioned or scolded unlike you were on multiple occasions.
If you recall, your behaviors were so hostile that one judge threated to lock you up and there were at least 5 deputies in the room when they were trying to run child support numbers. The Guardian ad Litem and your estranged husband had to wait for you to clear the premises each time we went to court after waiting so that law enforcement court escort them out.
So if you want to continue to insult me and give me bad reviews, just know that you should not mislead the public and should tell them what actually did happen including when the Court had to discuss with you that wearing a shirt with a bedazzled marijuana leave on it wasn't the wisest choice for a court hearing.

Parental alienation is a real thing. I'm not your client, thankfully my ex and I co-parent effectively. But I know your work as a GAL. Blaming a parent, that you wrote a report to say parent 1 is smear campaigning parent 2, to the children but parent 2 should have a better plan for getting the children more comfortable with them...? Totally missing the point. You clearly have no understanding of parental alienation. That is unfortunate. Also, home studies are a real thing. I have a legal background and I know they are absolutely critical. I find it bizarre that GAL doesn't do one for every case.

Response from owner

I do not dispute that parental alienation is a real thing - never have. I have worked with many health professionals regarding this issue. As you stated, you were not my client. The role of a Guardian ad Litem is to represent the child or children. Quite often, neither party is happy with the work and the recommendation that I provide to the Court. If there are complaints about my work then they need to be given to the judge who is hearing the case to decide the veracity of those complaints or issues. If you let me know (and it can be privately by call at 757-454-2110 or email at bt@stepuptobat.com) I will be willing to look into the issue that you are discussing. At this point in time, I cannot address the issues specifically as I have no idea what case you are referencing. Additionally, if you were not party to the case it is not proper for whomever shared my Report with you. We are talking about the privacy of the children and my Reports are for the Court, the attorneys and the parties. Unlike other Guardians ad Litem, I do not put restrictions on attorneys giving their clients my Report (many attorneys do and many actually require the Report back, no copies, no scans and no photos). I am willing to engage in transparency with everyone involved in the case but no one else. Lastly as it pertains to a home visit, there are different times and reasons for home visits. For example, the parties can request it or the Court can require it. When I do a home visit, it is usually a surprise visit. I have gone through trash cans looking for alcohol based upon the allegations, I have been to homes on the weekends (my time with my son as I am a divorce father) and caught people using illegal drugs. I have gone through closets, refrigerators, cabinets, cars and other areas of a home based upon the specific complaint. Again, given that I do not know what case you are discussing or even if you were a party to the case, I cannot address that matter specifically. Lastly, I would have appreciated it if either you or someone involved in the case calling me to discuss these issues during the pendency of the case or making requests to look into these issues. If the case is still open, please call me so that I can investigate and/or bring it to the Court's attention so the Court can instruct me as I serve as an officer of the Court.

Office staff awesome. The attorney was not so great. He did not seem to care about my case. Little to no contact. He said he would be at my final proceeding for a little while never showed. The attorney that attend in my final proceeding was awesome. I will not ever seek counsel with this attorney again or recommend him to anyone.

Brian took a case that another well known attorney said was impossible to win. Not only did he win that case, but he also got several show causes dismissed. On our scheduled court date we had two additional show causes that were never served, however, Brian got them dismissed without having time to prepare. What stood out the most with Brian and his office was their response time. It was either same day or soon after, which is pretty unheard of with most lawyers. We will be continuing to use him for future services and recommend him for difficult custody cases.
