Lord and Heinlein played a pivotal role in resolving a complaint lodged against me by a former employer with the MN Board of Nursing. To provide context, in 2020, I tragically lost my brother to suicide, which left me grappling with profound emotional distress. Subsequently, in 2021, while working in the ICU of a facility specializing in trauma care, I found myself repeatedly assigned to care for patients who had survived suicide attempts. Despite my earnest pleas to the charge nurse and manager to avoid such assignments due to the potential triggering of my PTSD, my requests were disregarded. On a particularly challenging shift, overwhelmed by reminders of my personal trauma, I made the difficult decision to leave my shift early after informing the charge RN of my distress. I reported off to a responsible RN the details of my assignment, and then went home to recover. Regrettably, this led to my termination the following day. The failure of the ICU management to acknowledge and accommodate my past trauma, despite my repeated requests, pushed me to a breaking point.
