Paid consultation that provided no meaningful analysis or guidance. Despite explaining before the appointment that EOIR showed “no case found” for the A-Number, the consultation consisted almost entirely of the attorney rechecking the same number, expressing confusion, and stating that the result “shouldn’t be possible.” No clear explanation or legal assessment was provided. The appointment started late, ended quickly, and concluded with a generic ~$6,000 estimate with no defined scope, no clear next steps, and a promise to follow up. No follow-up was ever provided. The consultation did not justify the time or cost.

Response from owner

Hi Preston. We have never consulted with you directly. You were present during a paid consultation with another individual, who expressly permitted you to attend.

At that consultation, no documentation or prior case information was available. When no case appears in EOIR or USCIS systems, that is not “confusion”; it is itself legally significant and materially limits what any attorney can responsibly conclude in real time. Still, two attorneys spent additional time after the consultation independently searching multiple databases to determine whether any record could be located. Based on that follow-up, we sent a detailed written explanation the following morning outlining:

what the available information suggests;
what likely occurred procedurally from the context;
why nothing could be filed without knowing more about what had happened; and
what specific information would be required to reach a definitive conclusion.

We suggested starting with a Freedom of Information Act request because, without even basic information about what has occurred, no one can responsibly provide legal advice. That email was sent several days ago.

We did not offer a contract or quote for representation because doing so without verified facts would be irresponsible and unethical. In immigration law, a competent consultation sometimes ends with the conclusion that no legal relief is presently available without additional information, and that honesty is part of what clients are paying for.

For anyone reading this review: a meaningful consultation requires basic information about your immigration and family history. When a person does not know what has happened in their case, what has been filed, or where matters stand, filing motions or applications can do far more harm than good. We can explain possibilities, risks, and next steps, but we cannot invent a case, a strategy, or a fee. Sometimes the most responsible advice is that nothing should be filed until more information is available.

We stand by the care and diligence that went into this consultation and follow-up.

I’ve been a client of Hoppock Law Firm LLC for too long, and my experience started off well, especially with attorney Kelly, who did an exceptional job handling my case. However, things took a complete turn when I received an email informing me that Kelly was no longer working with them. Instead of continuing the case smoothly, they reassigned my case to another attorney and now expect me to pay again for the same petition I had already paid for. This is completely unacceptable and feels like they just dropped the ball on me. I trusted them with my case, but now it seems like they’re more interested in charging me again rather than honoring the commitment they initially made. I would not recommend this firm to anyone looking for reliable and consistent legal representation.

Response from owner

Hi David. My office works with written contracts to avoid confusion about what the work includes and doesn't include. We have to charge for our work, because I am committed to paying my staff a living wage, among other things. When the work we've already completed is finished and then new work is required, a new contract is required. That requirement is explained in our contract, and it's not just a legal requirement - knowing what our agreement includes and does not include is also for your benefit. It's a bit like going to a mechanic or a dentist or a doctor. They have to charge for new work when new work is required. If they didn't, they'd have to close their business. Our rates are well below the average in Kansas City. But unfortunately, I do have to charge for my time. However, I am very sorry that that was frustrating for you, and I do wish you and your family the very best. Please call if you ever need assistance. Our office phone number is 913-267-5511. ~ Matthew Hoppock

Matthew is an outstanding lawyer. He is very understanding and professional. When me and my mom didn’t speak English, he would try to speak Spanish to us, which we really appreciated. The secretaries are always nice, and they answer all your questions. I would 100% recommend him.
