Respectfully, I wouldn’t touch this law firm with a thirty nine and a half foot pole. I began my case at the end of April 2025 with Blaine Edwards. During the initial consultation, I felt confident moving forward. As time went on, he was frequently late to calls and even missed a few completely. After I addressed how important timing was, things improved, but that conversation shouldn’t have been necessary in the first place! I understand custody cases involve waiting and back-and-forth with the opposing party. What was far more frustrating was the firm’s communication. They encouraged using their online portal, yet I rarely received responses there. I was also given a number to text, but messages went to the general office and usually resulted in “we’ll talk to your attorney and get back to you,” without follow up. The last time I heard from Blaine was beginning of August. Then, I didn’t hear from anyone for three weeks. In the midst of an already stressful situation, the silence was infuriating! All of a sudden, Alex Scherf overtook my case and there was no explanation on why. He was fine but not the attorney I originally agreed to work with. After my case was closed, I had an employee reach out to ask about my experience - I was very honest and open. I was told that Blaine left their firm in August and no longer employed by Hoyer. This was the first I had heard this! He then explained a lot was thrown at Alex at that time, which I completely understand! But there should’ve been a conversation and solution to actually manage Alex’s workload. Hearing from Hoyer first was rare - I was the one constantly reaching out. When I asked for an update I felt reprimanded because they have a “24-48 hour response policy” okay it’s been 7 days since I’ve last heard from my attorney so?? I received several invoices that stated “various” for thousands of dollars. After my case had closed, they let me know that detailed billing notes were only visible on a computer browser not a phone, something I was never informed of. I know there are a lot of moving parts but even when I wasn’t hearing from anyone and there wasn’t any action, I would suddenly get a huge bill. I wish I would’ve ditched Hoyer early on in my case. Overall, I felt like I was on the back burner the entire time, they didn’t care to fight for me, their communication poor, and the billing vague. I just finished my case and it took 10 months - in the initial consult, Blaine stated we could get things done in ~30 days. I understand some delays are outside the firm’s control, but there were certainly areas that could’ve been handled more proactively! In the post-case call, I was offered my final invoice to be waived if I would leave a 5 star review… the total invoice was allegedly $400, which is a small amount in comparison to what I had already been charged in the previous 10 months. The offer itself was shocking!! I let them know I was uncomfortable leaving a dishonest review and to send me the final invoice. The next day I received a bill for $754, that’s fun that they found an additional $354 worth of made up work to charge me for! This firm is very slimy! I’m sure they will respond and explain everything away but take my word for it and use any other firm!!

Thank you for sharing your perspective. Family law matters are often stressful and emotionally difficult, and we recognize that clients may experience the process differently.

For readers evaluating our firm, a few points may be helpful. Custody and divorce cases rarely resolve in 30 days, as timelines depend heavily on court scheduling, negotiations with the opposing party, and the pace of litigation. While we work to move cases forward as efficiently as possible, many factors are outside a firm’s control.

Our office maintains detailed, time-stamped records of communications and billing through our case management system. Client messages, calls, and portal activity are tracked so attorneys and staff can respond and keep work moving forward. Billing entries are also fully itemized within the client portal.

Attorney transitions can occur when a lawyer departs a firm. When that happens, cases are reassigned to another qualified attorney so representation continues without interruption.

As the person responsible for leading this team, I will add that it is disappointing to see our staff described in insulting terms. Our attorneys and support staff work extremely hard to treat every client with professionalism and respect, even when situations are stressful or emotions run high. Regardless of circumstances, our team has always approached this matter respectfully.

We regret when a client feels dissatisfied with their experience. Our team remains committed to professional representation, transparent billing, and responsive communication for every client we serve, and we wish you the best moving forward.

The only thing that I like is that they were able to give me a monthly payment plan. The bad was everything else, lack of communication I could go weeks almost 2 months without any contact/information about my case. I went on a hearing and Blaine (not working there anymore) didn’t defend me, didn’t say anything to make me look better and just defend my case. Then he leaves the firm to open his own and nobody told me anything until it happened, then nobody was able to take my case!! Terrible firm, not recommended at all!

Response from owner

Thank you for sharing your perspective. Family law cases are often emotionally difficult, and clients sometimes hope for outcomes that the facts of the case or the law ultimately do not support. While our attorneys work diligently to explore every available option, legal results are determined by the facts, the law, and the court, not by a law firm.

For readers evaluating our firm, it may also be helpful to understand that last year we experienced an unexpected attorney transition when an attorney left the firm. Several cases had to be reassigned quickly so clients would not experience a lapse in representation. Our team stepped in, reviewed files, and worked to continue moving matters forward during that transition. Electronic time stamps prove that there was no lag in representation.

In some situations, we take extra steps to help clients continue their case despite complications or changing circumstances. Unfortunately, even those efforts do not always lead to a result that satisfies the client.

While we regret when someone leaves the process dissatisfied, our firm remains committed to professional representation, transparent billing, and respectful communication for every client we serve. We wish you the best moving forward.

Through the worst situation in my personal life, divorce, Alex Scherf with Hoyer Law was great to work with. Communication was great and I felt he really did everything to help me better a terrible situation. There was a bit of back and forth between me and my then spouse, but Alex worked with me and did what he could to reduce my fees and ultimately make the whole process easier on my end.

Response from owner

Justin, thank you for sharing your experience. We know how difficult and emotionally taxing divorce can be, especially when there is ongoing back-and-forth between parties. We’re glad Alex was able to support you with clear communication, thoughtful guidance, and a genuine effort to reduce unnecessary fees along the way. Helping clients navigate a hard season with care, strategy, and transparency is exactly what we strive for. We truly appreciate your trust in Hoyer Law and wish you peace and stability as you move forward.

The team at Hoyer is amazing! They've helped me through two tricky cases now, and I don't think I'd trust another practice as much as I do them! I got to work mainly with Alex this time around, and I am so grateful for him! He made sure I always knew what was going on, and was very understanding and compassionate. He made sure I was comfortable with every step we took, and had a lot of experience and knowledge of what we could do to make sure I got what I needed. I appreciate everyone at this practice, and while I hope I won't ever need their services again, I'm grateful for everything they've done for me.

Response from owner

Emily, thank you for your kind and honest review. We really hope you will not need us again, but if you do, you know where we are! Best of luck going forward.

I am writing this review to highly recommend Hoyer Law Firm for their outstanding work on my recent case. From our initial consultation, I was immediately impressed by the Hoyer Law Firm team’s professionalism and clear communication. Legal matters can be stressful, but the firm ensured I felt supported and informed at every step. The team was always responsive, returning calls and emails promptly, and they took the time to explain complex legal concepts in a way that was easy to understand. The depth of their legal expertise was evident in the strategic advice they provided. They meticulously analyzed my situation, developed a clear and effective strategy. Their proactive approach and attention to detail gave me immense confidence throughout the process. If you are seeking legal representation that combines top-tier expertise with genuine care for the client, look no further than the Hoyer Law Firm. They truly exceeded my expectations, and I recommend their services without hesitation.

Working with Casey and his staff was an excellent experience from the beginning. I wanted a peaceful and fair divorce with equal custody and division of assets, but the situation quickly became contentious. Besides his decades of experience as a lawyer, what stood out most about Casey is his experience as a former judge. That unique perspective gave me clear insight into what truly matters in court and how decisions might be swayed, which was invaluable throughout the process. Thanks to his guidance, we reached a successful mediation that avoided drawn-out court battles and, most importantly, protected my children from being caught in the middle. I’m deeply grateful for his support and now feel free to move forward and focus on being the best dad I can be.

Response from owner

Davy, thank you for your kind words and fair assessment of your representation. Our entire firm is so glad that this was resolved and that we've been able to help you lay a plan for the future. We wish you the best as you move forward from here, and if you ever need us we're happy to help again.

Beware. They overcharge. The service and product I received was poor. It cost me $931.50 for a simple demand letter that I could not use. The original charge was over $1,500. Including three hours at $390/hr for their staff to conference with the attorney and write a letter that I was told would take 1 to 1 1/2 hours. They brought it down after I complained and fired them. The letter was incorrect and incomplete. They did offer to rewrite it at no charge after I complained, but I do not trust the staff at this point. Found a better attorney who charges $500 for this service, although I did pay for the consult.

Response from owner

Cindy, thank you for your feedback. For those reading, a few clarifications:
• Drafts are always sent for client review because revisions and feedback are part of ensuring accuracy. The letter can't have been "all wrong," we're not inept, in fact we're very good at what we do. We collected information and used what the client sent in to write it. There is often a need to clear up information to get the details right.
• Preparing documents involves more than drafting—it includes opening the file and gathering information, which typically takes at least 1–1.5 hours on it's own. Cindy's expectation was her own, not what we communicated or promised.
• Our fees and retainers are clearly outlined in advance and reflect standard rates for family law firms in Utah. A phone call with the attorney for a quick revision would have cost Cindy significantly less than the $500 she's paying someone else to doctor up our letter and send it.
• The demand letter was an early attempt to resolve the case cost-effectively, though these letters often receive little response. In many cases, the next step is moving forward with full representation.
• We extended a courtesy credit to be mindful of Cindy’s budget; such credits are a gesture of goodwill, not an admission of fault.
• While not every budget aligns with our legal fees, for clients who value strong advocacy our rates are consistent with the level of service we provide. We're not for everyone though, and we understand that.

I just wanted to give everybody my opinion about this law firm. I had the opportunity to talk to Blaine Edwards. We sat down and went over all my problems. I gave him all my evidence we went through everything and he told me he was going to move forward on the case. So I paid $5000 detainer for his legal help. I was charged $1700 before they even signed onto my case. Then I had 2 more attorneys sign on. To my case which Cost more money. they did not do what they said they were going to do. In my opinion they took it up on their self to decide what they wanted to work on. My $5000 did not last very long. I would say maybe 3 weeks.

Response from owner

Brad, thank you for sharing your perspective. For those reading, we want to clarify how our process works. At Hoyer Law, the level of attorney involvement always matches the complexity of a case. Sometimes this requires more than one attorney to provide the defense a client is asking for, and fees are directly tied to the amount of work performed. Retainers are applied against this work, so how long they last depends entirely on the level of representation needed. When Mr Bosshardt came to us he said funds for his defense were no object, he wanted the full battalion behind him. We took that to assume he wanted full representation, but that does not mean we charged him frivolously. All our billings are detailed, transparent and justifiable.

We are also committed to maintaining a professional and respectful attorney–client relationship. In rare circumstances, when expectations and communication no longer align, we may decide it’s best to withdraw rather than continue representation, as was the case here.

Our fees and retainers are always clearly explained up front, and while we may not be the right fit for every budget, we remain dedicated to providing high-quality advocacy and clear communication for clients who value experienced representation.

This review is an account of my highly disappointing experience with Hoyer Law Firm, and I hope it serves as a cautionary tale for anyone considering their services. I was initially impressed by the personal connection I felt with the founder during our preliminary discussions about my child custody case. His empathetic approach led me to hire them, believing my case was as important to them as it was to me. However, post-contract, the firm’s service drastically changed. What started as regular updates soon dwindled to infrequent communication, despite me being billed for every attempt I made to gain insights into my case's progress. Alarmingly, I wasn't introduced to my actual representative until the day of the court hearing, which is unacceptable. On the day of the hearing, I found myself having to confirm if an attorney from Hoyer Law would even be present. The hearing resulted in a denial of my request, primarily because the firm failed to submit a vital document on time—a document that explained the justification for amending my divorce decree. Despite having ample time (over a month), they only managed to submit it on the morning of the hearing. Despite promises that I wouldn’t be charged for resubmitting the necessary documents, I was later billed over $1,000 in vague fees. Overall, the preparation for court alone cost me an excess of $6,000, which, after consultations with other lawyers, appears to be exorbitant given the unclear breakdown of charges. My years of professional interactions with trial lawyers with a job I previously had have led me to realize one harsh truth: to them, clients are merely numbers. These lawyers, adept at sales, leverage your vulnerability to maximize their profit. Their primary skills typically do not lie in legal expertise but in their ability to sell a narrative to the judge, jury, and especially to you. I urge extreme caution with Hoyer Law and, frankly, any firm. The legal system often feels rigged, with law firms like these playing a significant role in its corruption. I regret choosing Hoyer Law. They overcharged me, assigned me a lawyer whose courtroom skills were questionable at best, and showed a general lack of diligence and urgency, except when it involved billing me or when my retainer was running low. For those seeking justice or adjustments in legal agreements, consider handling it yourself or thoroughly researching before committing to any firm. From my extremely negative experience, I have learned that most firms exploit desperation. Don't fall victim to their tactics. Consider hiring someone else and consult friends/family that have had a very positive interaction with their law firm. They do exist but in my opinion are extremely rare. Update: Based on their recent response (See the firms response), I hope anyone considering this firm sees the reality and looks elsewhere. They ignored the overcharging and the delays they caused by failing to submit required paperwork, opting instead to attack the very clients who paid them thousands for subpar (if any) actual service. There are many excellent law firms out there, but this one definitely isn’t among them.

Response from owner

Nate,
I'm sorry that you we did not meet your expectations. Sounds like you have issues with lawyers in general and that your review was largely a convoluted opinion about all law firms. We can't really help that. We carefully and responsibly prosecute all cases in our care. We have multiple attorneys in our office, and from time to time another attorney must cover a hearing, it is common practice. We hear it a lot, people complain about not getting enough updates, and then they complain for being billed for updates. It's usually a general complaint about having to pay for a professional service altogether. We sincerely hope you can find the lawyer of your dreams someday. In the meantime, we recommend Legal Aid for discounted and/or free legal defense.

I paid just around $3000 in attorney fees for 2 months of representation with no court appearances or filings… just emails with OC and phone calls without even meeting Mr. Hoyer in person. He quickly referred me to his subordinate counsel for several weeks. I received such a large bill through two months, I made a change immediately and was so glad that I did. When I requested correspondence between him and opposing counsel to try to substantiate some of the cost, he would not forward that to me. You may want to make that inquiry if you ever decide that you want to retain him as I feel, this is highly irregular and far from transparent when you are paying for his services. Mr. Hoyers office said they would only send emails to my new attorney if he requests them but, would not send them to me. I asked on multiple occasions for a 10 minute appointment with Mr. Hoyer to place a name to a face and shake a hand after spending thousands of dollars the first few weeks and during the first month and was told he was ill or on vacation and just given the run around or in court. I also paid the $300 initial one hour consultation, which was by phone and not in person. I will tell you that my experience was a couple years ago in 2022 and I have utilized five attorneys for business and real estate transactions that were FANTASTIC. Mr Hoyer not only did not place his client as first priority, but overcharged and was an inefficient in utilizing an associate inexperienced attorney to assist and charged and charged. He was not transparent and would not share communications ie emails between he and opposing counsel when I need to address my situation… when I retained my next attorney, his open book policy was to CC all communications which I found refreshing and exceptionally transparent. Do you due diligence here…my experience was challenging, costly and a nightmare. I just read the follow up which was done months later. I cannot imagine anyone having an issue with the Utah State Bar being copied on correspondence between hired attorneys. My newly hired attorney did not have that problem and never has in 30 years. I find that laughable that an attorney can speak about your case to your attorney but your attorney cannot share this with you but, you pay him for his time???!!! You can be the judge. Secondly, I was told specifically by Mr. Hoyer that he would be handling my case in our hour long PAID discussion by phone. I paid a $3500 retainer immediately because of that. Evidently, he changed his mind as I was pushed over to another attorney almost immediately other than correspondence between OC...and by their own admission...they handle cases after Covid without even meeting many of their clients. If YOU want this kind of relationship with your attorney ...this is the law firm for YOU. I never had a video call, Zoom call or personal meeting. Just emails and telephone calls for over $3000 in a few weeks with no filing or court appearance. Just a few emails and phone calls. The Hoyer Law firm response..."It just saves everyone time and the effort of coming into the office." reflects what you are paying for here. If you want this kind of arm's length, distant representation that I experienced as well which seems the norm here...this is the law firm for YOU. I feel this follow up by Hoyer Law speaks volumes and best of luck in your decision making.

Was a waste of my time and money. Over 8k spent and had absolutely nothing to show for it. Felt like blaine Edward’s was working with opposing counsel instead of me. Was told during negations that I was better to sue my ex after the divorce for breach of contract, turns out I can’t because we settled on the in the agreement. Was also told in December it would only cost me another $1000 to finish my divorce. Well $1500 later still in the same place. Charged for work that wasn’t done. Also going to file a complaint with the Utah bar association. Also keep getting sent a bill that I paid, they won’t respond to an email, won’t answer when I call and won’t return a call so I can figure out why I’m getting sent a bill when I called in and paid it. Nothing but crooks. Edited so there was a problem with them processing my final payment. Instead of calling me and letting me know they sent an email. I tried calling them to figure it out but they would not answer or return my calls. They sent me to collections because I filed a complaint with the ethics board. Instead of calling me to get paid they sent me to collection. Eventually they got it back from collection and took off the interest, but that’s just petty to send me to collections because I filed a complaint about his lack of representation.

Colt, I'm sorry we could not resolve your issue to your satisfaction. As a firm, it is our policy to keep our clients completely informed about the status of their case. There are times when the landscape of a case changes, and in such instances our attorneys do all that is procedurally necessary to recommend the next best recourse. We pride ourselves in having a fully transparent billing system, and our staff is constantly reaching out to clients with outstanding invoices to clarify and/or collect payment via text, phone and email. I have looked at your case, it was professionally prosecuted and resolved according to the laws and procedures required by the state of Utah. I can honestly say that if we conducted our business as you described above we would not be licensed or in business. Attorneys cannot bill for work not done, it's unethical. The attorneys at Hoyer Law hold to the highest standards of ethics.

Best of luck,
Analia Hoyer - General Manager
Hoyer Law Firm
