Today, I spoke with a Family Law attorney. Going into the consultation, I was feeling eager and hopeful about all that’s to come. Since it is a family matter, it’s very sensitive topics and rather than the attorney getting to know me and asking questions about what I was looking for in my service I was demeaned and made to feel like my lived experience did not actually happen. I fully understand that proof and documentation is important, I stated several times I could in fact prove all that I was communicating beyond the call, if we decided to work together. Well, we’re not working together. The attorney was late to the consultation, I had to call the office for them to let me know if she was still attending. I was then questioned as if I was testifying and attempting to prove myself innocent, when I came for initial help and understanding. Even down to the amount of the fee, at the beginning she told me it would be one price, by the end she said I made up that whole price “I don’t know who told you that amount.” I didn’t pull it out of thin air. Nothing about it was welcoming, considerate, or just nice. It costs nothing for people to just be nice.
