Amazing so far

I had what I perceived as a very tricky situation, being that I was in Georgia and the mom was in South Carolina. I initially began filing for custody in Atlanta, and as the case began there, my son’s mom filed in South Carolina without informing me. I found out last minute — literally less than a week before I was supposed to be present in court there. With me being from Georgia and already having a case in process here, I found Nick after speaking to a few lawyers in the columbia area, and it was clear from the start that he was the right lawyer for the job. Not only did he fix it so that I didn’t have to be present, but he also put a pause on the South Carolina case while we resolved the matter in Georgia. Ultimately, the case ended up having to be fought in South Carolina, and that turned out to be a blessing in disguise because I had Nick as my representation there. He initially got me temporary primary custody and ultimately helped me mediate and get a final order naming me primary custodian — even though the other party was very much against that from the start. My case was a difficult one and hard fought, and he handled it with ease. He’s as thorough as they come, and I had the same experience as a lot of reviewers: he gave excellent advice that I, unfortunately, didn’t always follow. Still, he has the best instincts of any lawyer I’ve ever worked with, and throughout this battle — spanning three states and four different lawyers representing me — that says a lot. I promise you this man is simply the best. I experienced a very long and nasty divorce. Initially I was hesitant and didn’t follow all advice of Nick, however he remained patient with me until the end and fought to make sure I received what I needed. Communication is sometimes very slow, however he responds when it’s most important and does read your emails. If you are confused or afraid I recommend Nick as your attorney l. This man is AMAZING. He is very knowledgeable and aggressive in the courtroom which is exactly what I needed. I was in a horrific divorce and custody case where I lost my kids (temporarily) to my husband and his family. He was my second attorney. As a team (because he did care about my input) we were able to completely turn my situation around where my kids are moving back and the father has to move closer to us. He does not have a paralegal. I first got to know Nick Mermiges after I took over one of his custody cases to handle the appeal. Often the trial record I get from an attorney (especially the attorney who lost at trial) is a disaster. Nick provided me the best trial record of my 30-year career. He clearly knew how to try the case, got in 99% of the evidence that would have helped his client, and the evidence and the testimony he elicited presented a clear and coherent picture of why his client should get custody. Even though he lost at trial, within 2 1/2 months I was able to get the result reversed. This was mostly due to Nick's excellent trial skill (even excellent attorneys lose on occasion--often because the trial judge got it wrong) and the excellent trial record he provided me. Since then I have gotten to know Nick personally. He is passionate about family law and passionate about helping parents maintain a relationship with their children. I refer much of the potential family law work I get calls on from folks in the Columbia/Lexington area to him.

I could go on and on about why you should hire Nick so I’ll try to keep it brief. I was in an awful spot for many reasons, complicated even more by my previous “attorney” and me being in Iowa, not South Carolina. So Nick had his work cut out for him. He is intelligent but also very emotionally intelligent. After a few conversations I felt that he understood my situation and was empathetic every step of the way. I talked to over 10 attorneys and none of them felt like they genuinely wanted to help. I felt unheard and sadly, a little helpless when I reached out. Once he took me on as a client he was always available, responsive to questions and clear about what the steps moving forward would be. He was transparent about his fees, how they would be allocated and how far we could proceed with the funds we had. I found the the cost to be reasonable, better than the majority and well figured. You need to get along with your lawyer on some level because it’s a process and you will be communicating a lot. I believe him to be a very honest person with a clear view of right and wrong. He’s also a no nonsense type and efficient in how he works and I needed that. I needed to get things done and done fast. He prepared me for a bit of a struggle and set my expectations. I respected that and the plan, did what he asked and the results exceeded those expectations. He told me he would put everything he had into it and he delivered. It’s been 3 months and it still hasn’t fully set in. I ended up with everything I wanted and more. We didn’t have to go to trial and I was saved from having to pay thousands of dollars more and dragging the whole thing out.
