Kathryn Jakuback Burke, was the attorney my family and I retained for a criminal defense case. Prior to signing the contractual agreement, Mrs. Burke was kind and gave us unrealistic expectations in terms of what she was willing or capable of doing to resolve the matter. She became dismissive and defensive whenever we called for updates. She also stated that she would be charging for calls, texts, etc… She informed me personally that she would be expediting a bond reduction, that was two weeks ago and today I found out that the Public Defenders office beat her to it last week! When questioned about the matter she became very defensive and abit hostile, in my opinion. Her strategy’s, the inflated expectations, and callous attitude towards our family was very disheartening. I felt judged by her from the very first moment we spoke, and I was not the client! If you are a person of color, dealing with a legal issue that feeds into a stereotype—I strongly encourage you to seek counsel elsewhere! If you are innocent, you will be made to feel otherwise, and you will not receive effective counsel.

I wouldn't recommend this service for legal matters when your freedom or case outcome is on the line. My six-month case saw minimal work, despite their claims, and it resolved itself without their apparent effort. The only time I got calls back was when I kept calling for refunds or in the beginning for payment. Communication was a major problem. I was never informed about filings, and staff were rarely available to talk about my case. Often, I was promised callbacks or texts that never came. They even claimed I missed meetings I attended, and when I did have a meeting, they'd be 20 minutes late for a two-minute discussion.

After 2 and a half years and $7500 I was finally told that there was nothing that they could do after I asked how much were they going to charge me in full instead of sending me a bill every month. I guess if I wouldn’t have asked how much they would charge me in full, they would have just kept sending me a bill every month. I honestly wouldn’t recommend this law office at all. Just took my money and ran out on us.
