The pro-data-center argument coming from the developer and their lawyer in Blakely is built almost entirely on a sales pitch instead of real accountability. Their messaging leans hard on vague promises of “economic benefit,” “jobs,” and “investment,” while sidestepping the real impacts residents actually live with. Construction jobs are temporary. Permanent data-center staffing is minimal. Meanwhile the long-term costs are concrete: massive power draw, water use, discharge, noise, land conversion, and stress on local infrastructure. Instead of addressing those risks directly, the attorney frames opposition as a procedural problem. When resistance grew, the explanation was not that the project had flaws, but that officials didn’t give enough chances to re-package it. That approach treats public concern like a marketing obstacle instead of a legitimate policy issue. Wanting more meetings to “sell” a project is not the same thing as proving it belongs in a residential borough. The stance also relies on the assumption that bigger always means better. A multi-building AI data center campus pulling utility-scale power is not a neutral land use. It reshapes zoning, water systems, electric rates, and future development patterns. Yet the pro-data-center narrative avoids those downstream effects and stays focused on short-term revenue optics rather than long-term community cost. In short, the lawyer’s position reads less like stewardship and more like promotion. It emphasizes opportunity while minimizing burden. It frames community resistance as delay rather than due diligence. And it treats a residential borough like an empty hosting platform instead of a place people actually live. Economic development is not automatically good development, and Blakely residents were right to ask whether this project serves the town or simply uses it.
