We lost a barn the winter of 2016-17 due to snow load. We had insurance for the replacement value of the barn and were assured by our insurance company that there would be no problems. We live in a remote location and it is difficult to schedule contractors. The insurance company hired a 3rd party adjuster to determine the replacement value prior to our finding a contractor. The adjuster’s estimate came in considerably less than the value of our policy, but they assured us that once the contractor bid came in they would adjust the amount accordingly. And they paid us a percentage of what the adjuster determined to get us started on the demolition and replacement of the barn. Once we found a contractor he began working with the 3rd party adjuster hired by the insurance company. The contractor (who had no idea what the value of our policy was) put together a bid that was more than the adjuster’s replacement value. The contractor bid was still less than the value of the policy. Communications between our contractor (who was approved by the insurance company), the adjuster, and the insurance company dragged on as our contractor began the rebuild with the original distribution from the insurance company. Ultimately, the adjuster and the insurance company would not budge. And, the insurance company would not release all of the money that the adjuster had determined. We could not pay our contractor for all of the services he had provided and the barn was not closed in. It was at this time in 2019, as the barn sat unfinished, that we began looking for an attorney. We were so incredibly lucky to find Millard & Bragg Attorneys at Law, P.C. and to work with Doug Bragg! Our case was complicated due to the time that had elapsed from the time the claim was filed. Doug navigated all of these issues and filed a lawsuit. The insurance company decided to go to arbitration. At this point Doug suggested that we hire a public adjuster, Paul Hanlin, to determine the value of the barn. With Doug and Paul’s help we were able to get a fair settlement. At this time, July of 2020, we have finally rescheduled with our contractor to complete the barn. We cannot say enough good things about Doug Bragg! Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!!
