I contacted this firm after being advised by my doctor that there was a fund to compensate people who had gotten Guillain Barre from a flu shot. All of the doctors who treated me before, after and throughout 12 days of hospitalization acknowledged that the flu shot I received 6 days earlier had caused this condition. I did have some confusing symptoms at first but the diagnosis of GBS from a flu shot was noted throughout my records. The legal process lasted over five years and I usually had to contact the firm to see what was happening - they did not keep in close touch with me. I was repeatedly assured that I had a very strong case and that if, for some reason, we lost the case we could always appeal. Ultimately a two day hearing was scheduled and the HHS Fund paid for two lawyers, two expert witnesses, a special master, his clerk, technician and another assistant, to fly to San Francisco and spend three days. I could see no reason why it couldn't been done on Zoom, which of course would have been less costly for the fund. The hearing lasted one day and the special master, who had promised to issue a ruling, put it off until the following Friday. But instead of issuing a ruling he then asked the lawyers to submit closing statements (which could have been done at the hearing). Ultimately, weeks later, he completely denied my claim and I was flabbergasted. Somehow the facts had been distorted to deny that I had acquired GBS from a flu shot - although no one suggested any other way I could have gotten it. After reassuring me for five years that they would appeal a denial, Muller Brazil informed me, without any discussion or input on my part, that they decided not to appeal. Even though my lawyer stated that we had drawn the toughest special master in the system, and that she was sure we would have prevailed with a different special master. The last communication I received was a request to sign a release so they could collect fees - the lawyers collect fees (five years worth would have been quite substantial) whether they win or lose the case. I sent a message asking that they reconsider their decision not to appeal. I never even received a reply. I really can't judge if my representation was competent or not, but it certainly was not effective or successful. On the day of the hearing, everyone else who left that room was well compensated for their time. The only person who walked away with nothing was the one who spent 12 days in the hospital with a life-threatening condition just 6 days after having a flu shot. I am still precluded from having a flu shot and struggled for months over whether or not I should get a covid vaccination because of my history. This system certainly didn't work for me. I'm 76 and had never filed a claim or lawsuit in my life - but I was left to feel like some kind of fraudster. I am happy for those who were well served - GBS is a terrible condition and it is only right that the fund was set up with the knowledge that flu shots can cause harm or even death to a small number of those who receive them. I am one of those, but in my case the funds (many thousands, surely) went to lawyers, expert witnesses, special master and staff.

I could write a book about the staff at Muller Brazil. Simply put, they are lifesavers. I was really down when I came to them-physically and emotionally. I had been turned down by another firm and my hopes were dwindling. Amy and Tereza always treated me with dignity and respect. They listened when I cried and did their very best to keep me informed.
