I hired Theresa to represent me in 11/21. My wife and I paid her $10k up front with arrangements to pay off the rest at $1k per month until the entire retainer of $20k was paid. We diligently paid her $1k per month for the next 7 months. Trial was set for 09/23. My wife lost her job in 2022. We were on assistance with the state pay our rent, power, water & food. During all of this we fell behind on our payments to Theresa. My wife emailed Theresa & told her she had lost her job, & that we would catch back up with her as soon as we could. In 07/23, I was arrested again, for something that was not even in my possession. My co-defendant & I were both arrested on the same charges. Even though my co-defendant is taking responsibility, I sat in jail because my bail on the first case was revoked & set at $100k cash only. My wife began asking Theresa to request a new bail hearing. A couple of days after I was arrested in 07/23, Theresa came to visit me to tell me that we better pay her some money or else she will be resigning from the case. She said we owed $3k for the retainer & $7.4k for trial. My wife paid her $4.1k within 2 days, which paid off the retainer & put some money towards trial. My wife also sent her flowers, as well as sent emails & left voicemails, to which she got no response. My wife continued to ask her several times if she could request a new bail hearing for me but never received any response. So, after I had paid her $21,090 I still sat in jail. I lost my job, my car & wife struggled with our 3 kids. My wife had another $2.1k to pay her but she couldn't access it because there was a hold on it at her bank. When the funds were available, her bank would only let her send $700. My wife contacted Theresa a couple of times that week to let her know that she would be by with the $2.1k, but she never made it due to car problems & being on thin ice at work due to all of the stress from all of this. My wife sent her the $700 one morning & after TR came to the jail, throwing a motion to withdraw in my face, basically threatening that if I don't sign it will look bad to the judgr. I pleaded with her not to do that, telling her I needed her, trial is 2 months away. She told me that if paid her $10k by 5pm she wouldn't file the motion until Monday. She also then said that since the habitual was filed trial fees increased from $7.5k to $10k, something we never discussed or that I ever signed for. The habitual was filed in 11/2022 & TR emailed us a copy of the court docs at that time, with no mention of fees increasing. My wife left work to collect whatever money she could before 5. She spoke to Naomi at TRs office. They only had record of $3.6k in pmts,. not $4090, said we still owed another $8.7k. My wife requested a statement showing where our money was going. Naomi hung up on my wife. Theresa ending up resigning from my case because my wife was "rude" to her front desk staff. I am her client, NOT MY WIFE. Imagine my wife's stress and fear. Now the attorney that we trusted with my life, ABANDONS US WHEN WE NEEDED HER THE MOST. Unethical. My wife left Theresa an honest review. Apparently., Ms. Ristenpart did not like it because she emailed me at 2:15am, telling me that she has been trying to get court appointed to my first case & she hopes my wife’s negative review doesn’t hurt our relationship & that she is hopeful that I can get my wife to remove the "negative & hurtful review.” SHE FIRED ME BECAUSE OF MY WIFE. She is trying to bury my wife’s review at the bottom w/ all these new reviews, & now 2 years since she last responded to a google review, she starts replying to comments to disprove my wife’s comments about her. My response to TR: I told her no. I don’t trust her, how could I now? She knows that we are a working class family. She knows that my wife is alone with 3 kids. Did she care? Absolutely not. She knows my fate is in her hands and she knows that she could help me. But instead she took our $20,000, withdrew and then sent us another invoice saying that we owe her another $19,000. Right.
