I sustained a spinal cord injury in a bicycling accident in Texas, which left me paralyzed from the chest down. The insurance company that provided coverage for the cycling club that I was in refused to pay more than a nominal amount for my medical care even though the club’s policy was for up to $1,000,000. Michael Viglione of Ryan, Ryan and Landa, represented me in obtaining an equitable settlement with the insurance company. Initially, the insurance company refused to negotiate. After exploring a variety of options, Mr. Viglione partnered with a firm in Texas to move forward with a suit against the insurance company even though partnering with another firm meant sharing any potential fee. The insurance company filed a motion to have the suit dismissed. When the judge ruled to allow the suit to move forward, the insurance company agreed to mediation. Through the mediation process, we quickly came to terms with the insurance company. The settlement from the insurance company alleviated the financial of burden of the ongoing medical, rehabilitation and home care costs of being a paraplegic.
