Steve's attitude and treatment could have been better. I can see he would be a great trial lawyer, but don't treat your client like that. Fee's were 8K. I cancelled the case with Steve's firm to humble him. Had a great additional discovery in my case, handled it myself, and I made one phone call and my case with DHHS was overturned, rightfully so. That simple. I could be wrong but Steve Smith knew about a typo in my pervious submissions to DHHS before I even brought him a copy of my submissions? Granted it was an awkward typo, but how did he know about it? My discoveries and findings would have been an excellent Lawsuit on DHHS and the Social workers making positive changes for families and children. I really thought Steve would be the one to go to. I am sure Steve will know who I am. The medical records auditor for FWA and patient quality improvement programs that's had success protecting families and children against DHHS in multiple cases and multiple states because I am right. I even thought at one small moment to offer my services free to his firm to consult on medical kidnapping cases due to being successful, but I will not be disrespected like that. Please learn from my submissions because I am right! I suspect they are also recording in their conference room so be aware. My employer is non of Steve Smith's business. If Steve Smith wishes to discuss this further he can contact me.

I had a wonderful experience with Steve Smith and his team in helping me with my divorce process. It was lengthy, due to my divorcee living outside of the country, but Steve and his team were up to the challenge and guided me and supported me every step of the way. For cases like this, I wouldn't have chosen anyone else to help me. I am so grateful for Steve and his firm to have been an incredible support system for me through my divorce. Thank you so much for all your help!
Hi Andrew, we're very happy to hear that you had a good experience with us! Our team aims to be the best support we can be through difficult times. We're always up for a challenge :)
Richard Lucas was wonderful to work with in my recent divorce case. He was extremely attentive to my divorce case, which was not a high value case for the firm, and also involved working with a difficult opposing party, and he was always available when I had important questions about how our approach or the opposing's would affect myself and my children. Most importantly, I could tell from day 1 that he truly cared about my well being and that of my 2 small children. He was extremely attentive to details and to timelines. Always professional, also very human and compassionate. Exactly what a single mom needs when getting divorced in a high-conflict but low value matter. Thank you Richard for your help! The paralegals at this firm are also wonderful! I would not recommend using Steve Smith himself as your lawyer (the reviews regarding him are negative and true), but Richard Lucas is a new and wonderful addition to his team. Thank you to Richard and the paralegal team for handling my case so well!
Hi Merissa, thank you for your kind words. Family matters are some of the hardest things to go through, especially when the conflict becomes high. Thank you for putting the trust into Richard and our firm, we are happy to hear that you received the attention and care for your case that you deserve. I do apologize for the experience you had with Steve, if you would like to discuss that further, please do not hesitate to contact us. Wishing you the best! :)
Amazing service and excellent staff!
Hi Ashley, thank you for your kind words! We aim to provide the best client service possible, and we're thrilled that this translated into a positive experience for you. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any future needs :)

This law firm took my 300$ consultation fee, knowing that they would not be able to take my case. I was supposed to be scheduled with Steve, Somebody else stepped in, and her words were exactly I was looking before we had this meeting and there’s nothing that I can do. When I gave my money I was took they took cases like mine all the time, far from the truth. People like this is not what you want when you want to fight for something!
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about your frustration and understand how upsetting it can be when expectations aren’t met during an already difficult situation.

The purpose of a consultation is to review the details of your particular circumstances and determine, based on that information, whether our firm is the right fit to take the case. In some instances, after a thorough review, we may determine that we’re unable to move forward with representation. When that happens, it’s not a reflection of the importance of the matter, but rather our professional obligation to be honest and ethical about whether we can meaningfully assist.

We also understand your concerns regarding scheduling and communication and take feedback like this seriously. We had a terrible experience with Steve Smith and his firm. He is the type of attorney that gives attorneys a bad reputation. We had a straightforward case that was not handled well. Steve is unprofessional and did not take the time to stay up to date on our case or review notes before meetings. He insulted my fiance and I on multiple occasions with comments that were personal and offensive. The office staff is no better and there is clearly a culture at this firm. We could have done a better job representing ourselves without an attorney. I do not recommend them at all and would urge someone to look elsewhere.
We’re sorry to hear that this was your experience. At Steve Smith Trial Lawyers, we take concerns about professionalism, communication, and client care very seriously, and it’s never our intention for any client to feel disrespected or unheard.

Because confidentiality is central to the attorney–client relationship, we’re unable to address specific details in a public forum. Steve Smith and his team will hit the ground running and provide excellent legal services in a no nonsense and professional way.
Steve Smith and his team are not only extremely knowledgeable, but supportive and sensitive to the fact that a child custody case can be emotionally distressing. Steve and his team are highly responsive, check in frequently, make sure I understand what is happening at all times, and explain everything to me in terms I can easily understand. If you're seeking legal help as a child custody client, call Steve Smith’s legal team today.
My ex husband used this lawyer after I left an abusive four year relationship to take my son from me. My ex husband told me he wanted primary custody- and that his lawyer “Stephen Smith” wanted me to sign my parental rights responsibilities away but he “wouldn’t let his lawyer do that” (this is all in text conversation) at this point my son was being withheld from me for over six months, my attorney could not show up for our case, I had just gotten a new place and was spending money I didn’t have so I decided to sign an agreement with no representation at Stephen Smiths office (my ex husbands lawyer) I showed up, signed the paper and left. Only to find out I had indeed signed away my parental responsibilities and rights. I know stephen smith orchestrated this as my ex husband expressed in text that he did not agree with Stephen wanting to do that and would not let him trick me into signing it away. Two years later, my ex husband blocked me a year ago (last October after my son and I discussed trick or treating together) I have not seen or talked to my son in a year. I do not know what my son thinks. I served my ex husband and did not file for a modification (6months ago)- I still have no lawyer at this point so I was holding off on filing. For having my ex husband served I owe Stephen (2,500$) for filing against me after I had my ex husband served. I hope Stephen uses some of this money to get his mental health in check, if not a face lift will surely help with the sagging and frown lines for his next court appearance. I am spending the next year saving up, I have documentation of everything. Once I can get representation and get in front of a judge this will come to a swift end, I will be able to see my son. I hope this law office will be held responsible for their part (they should be shut down). If any lawyers who read this want to reach out please do, I am starting to share my story and have all documentation.
We are truly sorry to hear how painful and distressing this situation has been for you. Matters involving children and family relationships are deeply emotional, and we recognize how difficult these experiences can be.

That said, our firm strongly disputes the allegations made in this review. Attorneys are ethically and legally prohibited from misleading any party, particularly in family law matters, and we do not “orchestrate” outcomes or advise individuals to waive parental rights without proper legal process and safeguards in place. Any agreements executed in our office are governed by court procedures and judicial approval, not unilateral action by counsel.

Because client confidentiality and court rules prevent us from discussing the details of any case in a public forum, we cannot address specific claims here. However, we take concerns about professionalism and ethics seriously. If you believe there has been an error or misconduct, we encourage you to raise those concerns through the appropriate legal channels so they can be reviewed fully and fairly.

We sincerely hope you are able to obtain the representation and support you need moving forward and wish you the best as you continue to pursue resolution through the court system.
Waste of money! My advice find someone else!
We understand how frustrating legal outcomes can be. What someone hopes will happen and what the law allows are often very different, and results are ultimately determined by facts, evidence, and the court—not personal preference. Our role is to advocate aggressively within the bounds of the law and work toward the best possible outcome given those realities. We regret that your experience did not meet your expectations and wish you the best moving forward.
A good rule of thumb: never trust a law office that claims to specialize in everything—medical malpractice, divorce, wills and estates, criminal law, and more. Real professionals focus and build expertise. When a firm spreads itself thin across so many areas, you’re not getting true specialists but rather generalists who claim to do it all, but rarely do anything well. Steve Smith Trial Lawyers is a perfect example of this problem. From my experience, there is a constant turnover in both attorneys and support staff, which is a major red flag. A reputable firm retains skilled employees who bring stability and experience to clients’ cases. Instead, this office feels like a revolving door, which makes it nearly impossible to trust that anyone there will follow through or even stay long enough to see a case through properly. If you happen to be unlucky enough to get assigned a Steve Smith attorney through the criminal justice system, do yourself a favor and request a different lawyer immediately. Having competent, stable representation is critical in those circumstances, and this firm does not provide it. What you end up with is a ragtag group of unprofessionals, operating more like a patchwork crew than a serious law practice. Professionalism, consistency, and competence should be the bare minimum for a law firm, and unfortunately, Steve Smith Trial Lawyers doesn’t meet that standard. If you value your time, money, and peace of mind, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective. While we respectfully disagree with the characterizations in this review, we recognize that clients and community members may have differing views on how law firms structure their practices.

Our firm is built around experienced attorneys who focus on specific practice areas within a collaborative team model, allowing clients to benefit from both subject-matter knowledge and collective resources. We are committed to professionalism, ethical representation, and continuity of care in every matter we handle.

Because we cannot discuss individual experiences or assignments publicly, we encourage anyone with concerns to reach out directly or seek independent counsel to ensure they feel confident in their representation.

I had the great pleasure of working with Richard Lucas and Tyler Soucy. They were both professional, responsive, and, most importantly, very passionate about my case. An elected official was attempting to interfere with my First Amendment rights, in what was an unprecedented case in this particular state. Not only did Mr. Lucas and Mr. Soucy understand the facts of my case, but they also grasped the precedent it would set. In addition to fully reviewing the evidence and exhibits I provided, they went above and beyond to uncover other exhibits about the defendant that I did not have in my possession. On the day of the trial, Mr. Soucy was masterful in his cross-examination; he slowly built our case to expose the defendant's frivolous attempt to use the court to chill free speech. I lost count of how many hypocritical corners he backed the defendant into. To say that I highly recommend the team at Steve Smith Trial Lawyers would be an enormous understatement. Mr. Lucas and Mr. Soucy are both champions for justice and incredible trial attorneys. I was very fortunate to have worked with these fine gentlemen.
We paid $300 for an online consultation that he never showed up to. Every step of our adoption has been made impossible for one reason or another. This is just the newest road block. *** Edit, after a few rescheduling errors on their part we finally connected. After a brief 20 minute meeting we are no closer and $300 further away from adoption. Everything they told us wasn't true. Like not even close. Complete scam artists. Waisted our money. Google did a better job.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and we want to sincerely apologize for the frustration and disappointment this situation has caused — especially during what we know is already a deeply emotional and complex journey. We did encounter unexpected issues with our scheduling platform, and unfortunately, your consultation was one of the appointments affected. This is not the level of service we hold ourselves to, and we take full responsibility. Our team acted quickly to address the issue and ensure all impacted appointments were rescheduled as a top priority. We understand how important every step of the adoption process is, and the last thing we want is to add more stress. Your journey is important, and we’re here to support you however we can. If you'd like to connect directly so we can assist further, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team.
First of all I want to thank them for lousy job they did to start it off. They give me a lawyer that I paid $300 to to talk to which come to find out his law license was suspended. I wouldn't have never known if my wife didn't look this lawyer up. Then all the information that I gave him they didn't pass on to the new lawyer that came aboard and he was no help at all. No suggestions ,no information on what I could do in which I already knew what I can do. Is just pay the bill, but if I'm paying you five grand for some advice you need to give me some advice. Terrible service. On top of that I had a couple mediations that were canceled they never even told me it was canceled so I'm paying for mediation time in which the other party didn't even show up.I don't know if it's becauseI was black or they just a lowsy law firm. But I suggest you look around in the state of Maine if you want a good lawyer because this is not the place to go. One thing I will be in court in the State of Maine again .That's for dam sure.
I was searching for two months for a law firm that I felt would take my divorce seriously. Although my situation had a few complicated details, my consultation with Steve made me feel like he not only addressed my situation directly but with compassion as well. When I needed time for more financial support in order to pay, they worked with me and compromised instead of being dismissive. I had an amazing team, all the lawyers and paralegals involved were responsive, caring, and did exceptionally well with my case difficulties with my former spouse and his lawyer. Steve and his team are strategic, and I couldn't have asked for more sound and supportive representation. I greatly appreciate the help and advice from Charles, as he had expertise that greatly aided my case and he cares for his clients, Mercedes for being there and always responding even when they were incredibly busy (which I understand! This team takes their time for each and every case), Renee for her assertiveness and being astute, Tyler for helping when Steve was not available, and being assertive and helping me navigate the questions when we had to speak in front of a judge. (even over Zoom, I still felt anxious). This divorce was not easy for me, the most emotional time I have gone through, and I felt that without my lawyer in court the day I had seen my former spouse for the first time in months, I would have shut down completely, but I didn't. Steve and his team are informed and do exceptionally well in all that they do. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. You have truly changed my life and I will always hold you all in high regards. This is the law firm that will have my business should I ever need representation again. Thank you.
