Great experience with Stone Canyon Law! I asked them to review a business contract - pricing was very reasonable and response time was a few days. The insight provided was extremely helpful and the in-person review was informative to provide necessary context. Would definitely use them again.

I spoke to attorney Marcel Ruzan on August 2, 2024 regarding a problem we were having with work done on our home. Our licensed general contractor allowed a subcontractor he didn't know very well to grind and seal our concrete floors. The sub claimed to have experience with grinding/sealing concrete but the results made it clear that he did not (see attached pictures). Our GC claimed we were just being unreasonable and began the process of putting a lien on our home for the remaining amount due after we refused to pay it. That was when I reached out to Stone Canyon Law for advice. Marcel informed me that the laws in Arizona were not on my side, and I was obligated to send the final payment, regardless of the quality of the work. He told me I could then pay him $1K to write a demand letter and open an ROC complaint. And those were my only options. That didn't sound right to me. My husband and I are both educated, intelligent people so we did our own research. And we discovered a statute of Arizona's Prompt Payment Act (A.R.S. 32-1181) that allows us to withhold payment under certain terms. And our circumstances met the criteria for withholding our final payment. I reached out to Marcel, sharing the new information I found and asking for confirmation of my understanding, but he never responded to me. I found another attorney, who was clearly much more experienced representing home owners in cases such as these. She was amazing and confirmed all of my understanding of the statutes. We were able to lawfully withhold the payment until the GC confirmed the floors had not been done correctly. He agreed to refund us the money it would cost us to have them done again. Most of the attorneys I contacted during this experience seem to only represent contractors interests, not those of the home owners. Nancy Giles of Giles Law is the attorney we ultimately worked with and she was wonderful.
